Seguir leyendoPublished and imprinted in 1989, “Ashton, Idaho-Wyoming-Montana” is a finely detailed United States Geological Survey topographical map of the high country where eastern Idaho meets the edges of Wyoming and Montana. At a scale of 1:100,000, it presents Island Park and its surrounding uplands with the clarity and authority characteristic of late twentieth-century USGS mapping. Contour lines, elevation shading, hydrology, roads, trails, and land-cover distinctions combine to form a precise portrait of a rugged recreational landscape. The map captures the region at a revealing historical moment, before later decades of expanded tourism, conservation activity, infrastructure change, and development altered the human footprint around one of the American West’s most beloved natural gateways.
The United States Geological Survey brought more than a century of scientific discipline to maps such as this, creating practical yet elegant documents that served land managers, engineers, conservationists, travelers, and outdoor enthusiasts alike. Founded in 1879, the USGS became the nation’s premier authority on topography, geology, water resources, and geographic data. By 1989, its cartographic work reflected both traditional field-survey methods and increasingly sophisticated national mapping standards. This sheet is part of that legacy: not merely a guide to roads and relief, but a structured scientific rendering of terrain. Its symbols and legend translate a complex mountain environment into readable form, balancing utilitarian precision with the quiet visual beauty of contour cartography.
Island Park, one of the principal places shown, occupies a distinctive volcanic and forested basin west of Yellowstone National Park. Long known for fishing, camping, hiking, snowmobiling, and summer retreats, the area is closely tied to Henry’s Fork of the Snake River, whose waters are among the most celebrated trout streams in the American West. The map traces waterways, tributaries, timbered lands, trails, and routes that connect scattered settlements to lakes, meadows, and mountain slopes. Its depiction of land cover and elevation helps reveal why Island Park has drawn both recreation and scientific interest: it is a landscape of broad calderas, cold rivers, dense forests, and expansive skies.
The eastern portion of the mapped region points toward the immense presence of Yellowstone National Park, while Targhee National Forest dominates much of the surrounding highland setting. This juxtaposition gives the map particular appeal, placing managed forest, parkland, river corridors, and rural communities within a single geographic frame. Mountain ranges and peaks are articulated by close contour intervals, allowing the viewer to read slopes, ridges, valleys, and drainage patterns with remarkable immediacy. Roads are differentiated by class, while local tracks and trails suggest access into more remote recreational terrain. The result is a layered view of the northern Rocky Mountain frontier, where wilderness, resource management, and tourism meet.
As a 1989 document, the map preserves a late-century snapshot of eastern Idaho and its neighboring borderlands before subsequent shifts in land use, population pressure, digital mapping, and environmental policy reshaped how the region is understood. Its representation of rivers, forests, reservoirs, roads, and settlements reflects the geographic knowledge and priorities of its time. The Snake River system, including Henry’s Fork and associated tributaries, forms the hydrological spine of the sheet, while timbered areas and mountainous relief emphasize the ecological richness of the terrain. For collectors, “Ashton, Idaho-Wyoming-Montana” offers both scientific accuracy and historical atmosphere: a disciplined USGS portrait of a wild, cherished landscape on the doorstep of Yellowstone.

Every piece is printed to museum-grade archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte paper. Choose an unframed map print, framed map or canvas using the finish options above. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.
With its rich detail and strong sense of place, this map makes a considered gift for a new home, anniversary, retirement or anyone with a personal connection to the area shown. Still deciding? Explore our collection of rare old and vintage maps to discover another place, period or style.
This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.
For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.
