Seguir leyendoPierre-Joseph Redouté’s Description des plantes rares cultivées à Malmaison et à Navarre, Pl. 07, published in 1813, presents Lobelia fulgens as a slender ascent of vivid red flowers and deep green foliage. The plant rises almost the full height of the composition, its tubular blossoms opening at measured intervals along the central stem while smaller buds gather towards the top. Set against a warm, nearly empty cream ground, the saturated scarlet blooms have an arresting clarity: botanical structure becomes both the subject of study and the organising principle of the design.
The plate belongs to a period in which botanical illustration was essential to the recording and circulation of knowledge about rare and ornamental plants. Malmaison, the residence of Empress Joséphine near Paris, was renowned for its gardens and collections, and Redouté’s association with this cultivated world helped establish his reputation as one of the foremost flower painters of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Often called the “Raphael of flowers”, he united disciplined observation with a refined watercolour technique, producing studies valued for their scientific usefulness as well as their compositional grace.
A closer look
The structure of Lobelia fulgens is revealed gradually from base to tip. Broad leaves extend from the lower stem, particularly towards the right, where their weight provides a visual counterbalance to the narrow flowering spike. Their greens range from clear, fresh tones to darker passages along the veins and folded edges. Fine shading gives each leaf a persuasive sense of volume without disturbing the overall delicacy of the plate.
Above them, the flowers project laterally from the stem like small flames. Redouté varies the crimson carefully: brighter highlights describe the petals’ curves, while deeper reds collect within the tubular throats and beneath overlapping forms. Tiny green sepals punctuate the flower heads, creating crisp transitions between red and green. As the eye travels upwards, fully opened flowers give way to less saturated buds, making the plant’s stages of growth legible within a single elegant vertical rhythm.
The surrounding negative space is crucial. Rather than placing the specimen within a garden setting, Redouté isolates it, allowing every branching point, vein and contour to be examined. Faint subsidiary botanical forms appear near the lower left, but they remain deliberately understated beside the commanding central stem. At the lower right, the handwritten inscription “Lobelia fulgens” supplies the scientific identity in graceful script, linking the image’s decorative poise to its documentary purpose.
Context and significance
Redouté worked at the meeting point of art, horticulture and natural history. His best botanical plates do not merely arrange attractive flowers on a page; they translate living specimens into clear visual records while retaining their particular character. Here, the elongated habit of the plant determines the composition, and the contrast between brilliant blossoms and spacious ground makes its morphology immediately comprehensible. The precision never becomes dry: slight turns of leaf and flower create movement throughout the otherwise formal presentation.
This balance helps explain the continuing appeal of Redouté’s work. Lobelia fulgens is presented with the concentration of a scientific specimen, yet its ascending sequence of scarlet flowers possesses the rhythm and intensity of an ornamental design. For those drawn to botanical art, historic gardens or the visual culture of early nineteenth-century natural history, the plate offers a particularly lucid example of observation transformed into art.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 24x36in (60x90cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
