Seguir leyendoHoehl Deutscher Sekt Gebrüder Hoehl Geisenheim am Rhein, created by Hollerbaum & Schmidt around 1900, reduces a sparkling-wine advertisement to a few emphatic elements: a green bottle, a field of brilliant yellow and the name “HOEHL” in monumental black lettering. The bottle stands upright at the centre, its gold-foiled neck catching the light while small white stars burst above it. With little scenery and no figures, the poster relies on colour, silhouette and typographic scale to make the product instantly recognisable.
The design belongs to a period in which the modern advertising poster was becoming an increasingly sophisticated feature of urban visual culture. Commercial artists needed to communicate at a glance, often from a distance, while giving a brand a memorable identity. Here, bold graphic clarity is combined with the ornamental refinement associated with turn-of-the-century design. The subject is Deutscher Sekt—German sparkling wine—from Gebrüder Hoehl of Geisenheim am Rhein, a town in the Rheingau wine-growing region. Rather than illustrating vineyards or winemaking, Hollerbaum & Schmidt present the bottle itself as the entire spectacle.
A closer look
The upper half is governed by the unusually large brand name. Its heavy, dark letterforms press firmly against the yellow ground, establishing a strong horizontal counterweight to the tall bottle below. The typography is direct and modern in effect, but the label introduces a more decorative register: “Hoehl Extra Trocken” appears in flowing script, surrounded by pale ornamental detailing. This contrast between commanding display lettering and finer, more cultivated label design allows the poster to address both visibility and refinement.
Although the composition initially appears symmetrical, its smaller details keep it lively. The white starbursts above the foil vary in size and placement, forming an irregular halo rather than a rigid pattern. They suggest the flash and fizz of celebration without showing a cork, glass or drinker. The bottle’s dark green body is defined against the warm yellow by crisp edges and a deep black shadow, while narrow highlights create just enough volume to prevent it from becoming a wholly flat silhouette.
Near the lower edge, the small imprint “Hollerbaum & Schmidt Berlin-N.65” sits discreetly beneath the main commercial message. Its modest scale rewards close inspection and reveals the carefully organised hierarchy of the design: brand first, bottle second, descriptive and production information last. Even the restrained palette serves this order. Yellow commands attention, green identifies the bottle, and black gives both the name and shadow their visual authority.
Context and significance
Turn-of-the-century beverage posters frequently linked new habits of mass advertising with older ideas of ceremony, luxury and sociability. This example does so with notable economy. The stars, gleaming foil and words “Extra Trocken” supply the associations of festivity and distinction, yet the arrangement remains uncluttered enough to function as a forceful street advertisement. Its Art Nouveau-era character lies less in elaborate botanical ornament than in the integration of lettering, decorative detail and commercial purpose.
The result is a particularly concise example of early twentieth-century brand design. Hollerbaum & Schmidt make a single bottle perform as object, emblem and announcement, while the acid-bright ground gives the poster an immediacy that remains striking. For those interested in wine culture, German graphic design or the emergence of modern advertising, it offers a vivid record of how refinement could be communicated through the simplest of visual means.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 36x20in (90x50cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
