Seguir leyendoLeonetto Cappiello’s Poster Per Florio Cinzano, created in 1930, sets two beverage bottles amid a whirl of striped, zebra-like forms. One figure flashes electric blue, the other a hot orange-red; both appear to leap across a dense black ground, their sweeping contours turning a straightforward commercial message into a compact spectacle of colour and movement. The Florio and Cinzano bottles remain clearly legible at the centre, yet they are surrounded by such exuberant graphic energy that the poster can be grasped before it is consciously read.
Italian-born and based for much of his career in Paris, Cappiello helped reshape European advertising during the early twentieth century. Rather than filling posters with descriptive scenes or lengthy copy, he favoured a single memorable conceit: an emphatic figure, object or mascot isolated against a dark field. This economy suited the conditions in which commercial posters were encountered—quickly, at a distance and amid the competing signs of the modern city. Made during the interwar period, Poster Per Florio Cinzano demonstrates how effectively he could unite brand recognition with an almost theatrical visual surprise.
A closer look
The composition is vertically arranged but resists stillness. The striped creatures cross the central axis in broad, curving movements, partially overlapping the bottles and setting up a rhythmic alternation of filled colour and black gaps. Their opposing hues sharpen the effect: the cool blue form answers the warmth of the orange one, while pale stripes and highlights keep both distinct from the darkness behind them. An irregular yellow shape in the upper-right area adds another burst of warmth and makes the arrangement feel deliberately off-balance.
Behind this commotion, the two bottles provide the design with its visual anchor. Their long upright silhouettes introduce a steady counterpoint to the bounding figures, while the names “Florio” and “Cinzano” are placed prominently on their labels. Florio is accompanied by more ornate decorative detailing; the Cinzano bottle carries two circular labels that punctuate its darker body. Small metallic-grey accents at the caps are among the poster’s quieter details, catching the eye only after the dominant orange, blue and yellow have made their first impression.
Depth is suggested through overlap rather than conventional perspective. The striped figures pass in front of the bottles, yet the broad areas of flat colour preserve the essential two-dimensional character of the design. Cappiello’s signature is partly visible towards the upper left, its cursive line contrasting with the forceful geometry of stripes, labels and bottle necks. Even the apparently empty black background is active: it separates the colours, clarifies every silhouette and allows the brightest forms to function almost like illuminated signs.
Context and significance
Cappiello’s posters belong to a decisive stage in the development of modern publicity, when advertisers increasingly relied upon simplified forms and instant visual recognition. His work retained the wit and draughtsmanship of illustration while adopting the scale, contrast and directness required by mass urban display. The products might be familiar, but the surrounding characters were often unexpected—an approach that made the advertisement memorable without requiring an elaborate narrative.
Here, Florio and Cinzano are not presented through a dining scene or a conventional still life. Instead, the bottles become the stable centre of an improbable, vividly coloured performance. That tension between commercial clarity and graphic invention gives the 1930 poster its enduring fascination: it is concise enough to register in a moment, yet sufficiently strange and finely balanced to reward a much longer look.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 36x24in (90x60cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
