Seguir leyendoLeonetto Cappiello’s Florio et Cinzano, les meilleurs apéritifs, created in 1930, turns two bottles into the centre of a brilliantly compressed spectacle. Florio and Cinzano stand upright against a radiant yellow field, flanked by striped creatures in emphatic blue and red. Their angled bodies disturb the otherwise near-symmetrical arrangement, lending the poster a playful, spring-loaded energy. Beneath them, the brands’ names are delivered in lettering substantial enough to be read almost at a glance.
An Italian artist active in France, Cappiello was among the designers who transformed European advertising in the early twentieth century. He understood that a street poster had only moments in which to establish itself amid urban visual noise. Instead of relying on elaborate scenes or lengthy explanation, he reduced advertisements to bold silhouettes, concentrated colour and a single memorable conceit. Here, the pairing of Florio and Cinzano becomes less a conventional product display than a piece of graphic theatre: direct in its commercial purpose, yet sufficiently strange to lodge in the memory.
A closer look
The two bottles form a firm vertical axis through the lower centre of the composition. Their dark glass and pale labels give them visual weight, while the closely grouped placement presents the brands as a natural partnership. Cappiello allows just enough decorative detail within the labels to suggest their established identities, but avoids letting such small information compete with the poster’s larger forms. The result is a carefully managed hierarchy: bottles first, names second, supplementary claim last.
Above and around them, the zebra-like figures supply the poster’s most unexpected motif. One is articulated in blue and white, the other in vivid red and dark stripes. They enter from opposing sides and at different angles, creating a lively counterpoint without breaking the overall balance. Their repeated striping introduces texture into an otherwise flat design, while their elongated limbs and sharply bent bodies imply movement. The figures are not naturalistic illustrations; they function as graphic emblems, made from contour, pattern and blocks of intense colour.
The yellow ground is especially effective because it carries almost no conventional setting. There is no bar, table or landscape to explain the scene. Instead, the saturated field isolates every silhouette and makes the blue, red, black and brown elements appear still more concentrated. At the bottom, “FLORIO ET CINZANO” stretches across the width in commanding capitals, followed by the smaller phrase “LES MEILLEURS APÉRITIFS”. Cappiello’s name and the date, visible at the upper left, are modestly placed beside the exuberance of the central design. A narrow border completes the poster, holding its energetic forms within a precise rectangular frame.
Context and significance
Cappiello’s approach belongs to a decisive period in the development of modern publicity, when posters increasingly relied on immediate recognition rather than dense description. His most successful designs often joined a commercial name to an improbable character, gesture or silhouette, creating an association that could survive after the viewer had passed. The animals in this 1930 work perform exactly that role: they do not describe the flavour of an aperitif, but give Florio and Cinzano a distinctive visual identity.
The poster also demonstrates how economical such advertising could be. A limited cast of bottles, animals and words produces rhythm, humour and clarity without sacrificing legibility. Its appeal lies in that tension between disciplined structure and visual mischief: a rigorously organised advertisement animated by two striped figures that seem barely containable within its edges.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 24x36in (60x90cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
