See the world with a fresh sense of perspective. Designed by cartographer Tom Patterson, the Equal Earth Wall Map shows countries and continents at their true sizes relative to one another, pairing thoughtful geography with beautifully balanced colour and clear, readable lettering. Created for schools, organisations and curious minds, it is an inviting reference map with the presence to become a centrepiece in your home.
The difference is immediately revealing. Africa is approximately 14 times the size of Greenland — and on this map, it looks it. Unlike the familiar Mercator projection, which increasingly exaggerates areas towards the poles, Equal Earth preserves the correct proportions between landmasses. Continents you thought you knew take on a different relationship to one another, encouraging a more informed understanding of the planet.
That clarity extends to the design. The political edition brings together more than 2,600 geographic labels, offering enough information for rewarding exploration without overwhelming the page. Countries, capitals and selected cities sit within a carefully organised hierarchy, while subtle shaded relief adds context to the political geography. Colour separates neighbouring countries, and considered typography helps the eye move naturally between the continental overview and the smaller details.
The physical edition offers a complementary view, allowing the landscape itself to lead. Terrain, rivers, lakes, vegetation and the ocean floor form a continuous portrait of the natural world, uninterrupted by country boundary lines. Mountains and lowlands, inland waters and submarine relief invite closer inspection, revealing the physical structure beneath the familiar arrangement of nations.
Both editions balance the practical value of a reference map with the visual appeal of contemporary cartography. The rounded outline gives the composition a gentle, globe-like character, while the spacious horizontal format suits a study, living room, classroom or meeting room. It is a map to return to: to locate a place in the news, revisit a journey, answer a question or discover somewhere unfamiliar.
Why choose an equal-area world map?
The projection you choose changes how you see the world. Equal Earth makes relative area its priority, giving countries and continents their proper proportions rather than allowing their distance from the equator to determine how large they appear.
In September 2026, the United Nations General Assembly backed wider use of equal-area projections, particularly Equal Earth, to improve how maps represent the relative sizes of continents. This map brings that approach into an attractive format for everyday reference, education and display.
Like every flat world map, Equal Earth makes compromises: some shapes, distances and directions are altered. Its particular strength is preserving relative area, making it especially useful for comparing countries, understanding continental scale and developing a better-informed picture of the world.

Make the map your own
Personalisation can give your world map an additional layer of meaning. You might mark a place that matters to your family, highlight a memorable journey or add a short dedication to celebrate a graduation, anniversary or retirement. Each addition can be composed to complement the map's existing design.
Explore examples of our map personalisation service, or get in touch to discuss your ideas.
Choosing your size
A larger format gives this map room to be enjoyed as both an artwork and a reference piece. If you intend to read the smaller place names regularly, we recommend choosing a generous size that suits your space. Compact versions retain the overall composition, but finer labels will naturally be more difficult to read.
For an especially large statement piece, a classroom display or a size not listed online, please contact us for advice.
Please check the listing images for your chosen edition and language to confirm whether a particular town, island or geographic feature is included. Our team will also be happy to check a location for you.
A thoughtful gift for a curious mind
This map makes a distinctive gift for travellers, teachers, geographers and anyone who enjoys understanding how the world fits together. It is equally well suited to a graduation, a new office, a retirement or a family home where questions about distant places are part of everyday life.
For someone who already loves maps, the equal-area perspective offers something especially rewarding: an opportunity to look again at a familiar world and notice it differently.
Fine printing and framing
Your Equal Earth World Map is made to order as a giclée print on acid-free archival matte paper, with optional professional framing. Choose an unframed print for your own presentation, or a framed finish to complement your room.
For guidance on framing, a particular finish or a bespoke presentation, please get in touch. We will help you choose an option that suits the map, its setting and the way you intend to use it.
This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.
For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.
