Seguir leyendoErnest Godfrinon’s Elixir De Kempenaar, created in 1909, turns a convivial bar interior into an animated advertisement for its namesake drink. Five figures gather around the counter in a tightly arranged vertical composition: a woman in a blue blouse and red skirt gestures towards the barmaid, an older customer sits quietly with his glass at the left, and two men converse on the opposite side. Burnished orange, deep green and earthy brown give the scene its enveloping warmth, while the product name commands the lower section in large decorative lettering.
The poster belongs to the richly illustrated commercial culture of the late Belle Époque, when manufacturers increasingly relied upon memorable pictures, distinctive lettering and carefully constructed brand identities. Godfrinon, a Belgian artist active in the early twentieth century, approaches advertising here as a form of visual storytelling. Rather than isolating the bottle or presenting a purely typographic announcement, he places the elixir within an recognisable social setting. The drink becomes part of the bar’s everyday theatre: serving, talking, watching and raising a glass. Practical promotion and decorative illustration are made to work together, each reinforcing the other.
A closer look
The exchange at the centre provides the poster’s principal point of movement. Behind the counter, the barmaid wears a red dress and crisp white head covering; opposite her, the standing woman leans into the encounter with an emphatic gesture. A small glass on the counter catches the light between them, focusing attention on the very object around which the advertisement is organised. Their red and blue clothing introduces brighter notes into the predominantly amber interior, distinguishing the figures from the dense browns and greens of the surrounding woodwork and furnishings.
Godfrinon builds depth through overlapping bodies and strong horizontal divisions. The counter stretches across the scene as a visual barrier and meeting place, separating customer from server while linking the figures into a single group. Above it, shelves crowded with bottles and decorative objects create a busy patterned backdrop. Below, the chequered floor introduces a contrasting geometry, leading the eye into the interior and offsetting the softer contours of clothing, faces and hats.
At the edges, smaller incidents enrich the central exchange. The seated man on the left, dressed in blue and holding a glass, appears withdrawn into his own thoughts; nearby, a table supports another glass and what may be a notebook. On the right, two male patrons converse, one wearing a hat and holding his drink. Minute highlights along the glassware enliven the subdued light, while floral details on the woman’s blouse and patterns in the men’s hats reward closer inspection. These touches prevent the setting from becoming a generic tavern interior: it feels occupied, particular and socially varied.
Context and significance
Advertising posters of this period had to communicate quickly while competing for attention in increasingly crowded commercial environments. Elixir De Kempenaar achieves that balance through a clear hierarchy. The illustrated scene first establishes mood and human interest; the emphatic title below then identifies the product with unmistakable directness. Its asymmetrical arrangement keeps the eye moving, yet the concentrated grouping around the bar ensures that every gesture ultimately returns attention to the drink.
What gives Godfrinon’s design its continuing appeal is the way persuasion is embedded in observation. The poster does not merely announce a beverage: it constructs a small social world around it, complete with differing expressions, fashions, vessels and patterns. The result is at once a piece of early twentieth-century commercial art and a lively study of public sociability, shaped by the warm palette and polished graphic intelligence of its era.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 36x24in (90x60cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
