WeiterlesenWittemann Bros.’s The Beer Drinkers of All Times, dated 1883, turns a convivial subject into a panoramic pageant. Drinkers drawn from different periods and social worlds crowd around a monumental barrel, raising mugs, exchanging glances and joining in the general commotion. Warm reds, yellows and earthy browns dominate, sharpened by flashes of green and blue, while the dense arrangement of faces, costumes and vessels gives the composition the energy of a theatrical ensemble.
The print belongs to a late nineteenth-century appetite for popular images that combined entertainment with encyclopaedic display. Rather than illustrating one identifiable gathering, it presents beer drinking as a custom extending across cultures and historical eras. Its humour depends upon comparison: elaborate robes meet military uniforms, rustic cloaks sit beside courtly dress, and all distinctions are temporarily levelled by the shared goblet or foaming mug. In this sense, the work is both a visual joke and a revealing example of how history could be repackaged as colourful mass entertainment.
A closer look
The great barrel in the central foreground acts as the composition’s anchor. Figures press towards it from either side, their overlapping bodies creating depth while keeping the scene deliberately crowded. Glasses, tankards and goblets appear throughout, picked out with fine outlines; these repeated drinking vessels form a visual rhythm, carrying the eye from one participant to the next. The barrel is not merely a prop but the informal centre of this many-period assembly.
Above it sits a commanding figure wrapped in yellow, elevated over the festivities and holding a goblet. His regal, almost allegorical presence gives the unruly gathering a focal point without imposing much order upon it. Around him, flags rise through the centre background, while soldiers in historic costume cluster at the upper right. On the opposite side, richly dressed figures converse beneath the edge of the composition, adding another layer to its parade of manners and clothing.
Individual gestures prevent the crowd from becoming an undifferentiated mass. At the lower left, a bearded man in a green cloak thrusts his mug upwards with exuberant directness. Elsewhere, heads turn, hands reach across neighbouring bodies and faces register amusement, concentration or good cheer. Patterns and folds in the garments distinguish one historical type from another, and leafy, ivy-like decoration along the margins reinforces the festive abundance. Despite the quantity of detail, the high contrast and clear contours keep each small episode legible.
Context and significance
Brightly coloured pictorial prints were an important part of nineteenth-century visual culture, circulating imagery that could be decorative, comic, educational and promotional at once. The Beer Drinkers of All Times draws upon that hybrid character. Its parade of historical types offers the pleasurable illusion of a survey, yet scholarly order gives way to spectacle: chronology is compressed, cultural difference becomes costume, and beer supplies the connecting theme.
What makes the composition particularly engaging is this tension between classification and revelry. It asks to be scanned almost like an illustrated chart, but its jostling figures resist any neat sequence. The eye repeatedly returns to the central barrel before setting off again among uniforms, robes, raised cups and animated expressions—a richly ornamented vision of history united by sociability and drink.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
