WeiterlesenNicolas Francisco Tamagno’s Terminus Absinthe bienfaisante Capital Deux Millions Pontparlier, created in 1892, turns an advertisement for absinthe into a compact theatrical encounter. Against a brilliant yellow ground, a red-and-white jester raises his glass towards an elaborately dressed woman who presents the bottle. Their exaggerated costumes, poised gestures and vivid colour give the scene the air of a comic performance, while the monumental word “TERMINUS” ensures that the product name commands attention before any detail has been absorbed.
Tamagno was an Italian artist working during the rapid expansion of illustrated publicity in the late nineteenth century, when bold commercial posters became an increasingly familiar feature of urban life. Here, the language of spectacle serves the beverage trade: saturated colour, memorable characters and emphatic lettering transform a branded drink into a personality and a miniature narrative. The reference to Pontarlier is especially resonant. The French town was closely associated with absinthe production, and its name carried a geographical authority within the drink’s fin-de-siècle culture.
A closer look
The jester occupies the lower left of the composition, lounging rather than standing to attention. His striped costume creates a vigorous sequence of red and pale bands, interrupted by a broad, rippling ruff and patterned details. One hand holds a small glass aloft, turning the act of drinking into a salute; nearby, an umbrella leans against his seat, an incongruous everyday object amid the fantastical dress. The figure’s relaxed posture contrasts with the more upright presentation of the woman beside him.
At the right, the woman’s pale robe is edged and ornamented with warmer accents, including touches of gold and red. Her flowing auburn hair is articulated in defined curls beneath an ornate headdress, and the dark bottle in her hand forms a strong vertical note against the light clothing. She inclines towards the jester, creating a visual exchange between bottle and glass. Small areas of greenery around the figures temper the dominant reds and yellows, while black outlines keep the forms crisp within the tightly arranged scene.
Typography is treated as part of the performance. “TERMINUS” stretches across the upper field in large, forceful capitals, with the more decorative phrase “Absinthe bienfaisante” placed beneath it. Lower down, “Capital DEUX MILLIONS PONTARLIER” supplies a further emphatic block of information. The contrasting scales establish a clear hierarchy: brand first, product second, commercial credentials afterwards. Behind the lettering, a mosaic-like yellow pattern prevents the background from becoming inert, yet remains sufficiently restrained for the dark type and richly coloured costumes to retain their impact.
Context and significance
The poster belongs to a period in which advertising increasingly borrowed the visual strategies of popular entertainment. The jester is not simply decorative: his costume introduces humour, performance and instant recognisability, qualities particularly effective in a crowded public setting. The phrase bienfaisante—suggesting something beneficial or health-giving—also reflects the assertive vocabulary with which drinks were promoted before twentieth-century advertising became more tightly regulated.
Tamagno’s design is compelling because it balances abundance with clarity. Patterns, curls, striped cloth, lettering and costume ornament fill the surface, but the essential transaction remains immediately legible: a bottle is offered, a glass is raised, and the name Terminus dominates above them. It is a vivid document of late nineteenth-century beverage culture, as well as an accomplished example of the moment when commercial graphic design discovered the persuasive power of character, colour and visual theatre.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 36x24in (90x60cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
