WeiterlesenPublished in 1968 from mapping dated 1962, the US Geological Survey’s “Bright Angel” presents one of America’s most dramatic landscapes at the revealing scale of 1:62,500. Centered on Grand Canyon Village and the famed South Rim approach, the map captures the canyon not as a distant scenic wonder but as a complex, navigable terrain of plunging drainages, serrated ridges, and immense geological depth. Its shaded relief gives exceptional visual force to the landforms, allowing the viewer to sense the abrupt descent from the rim to the Colorado River far below. In this sheet, the Grand Canyon becomes both monumental and precise: a landscape of named trails, cliffs, creeks, plateaus, and routes rendered through the disciplined language of mid-century American topography.
The US Geological Survey was uniquely suited to portray this terrain. Founded in 1879, the USGS became the principal scientific agency for mapping the physical character of the United States, producing topographical sheets that served engineers, land managers, conservationists, geologists, and travelers alike. By the 1960s, its mapping had become an indispensable tool for understanding public lands, particularly in regions where elevation, drainage, access, and geology shaped every human decision. The “Bright Angel” map belongs to this tradition of practical precision, yet it also carries an aesthetic power born from the terrain itself. In the Grand Canyon, contour lines and relief shading do more than record elevation; they translate millions of years of erosion into a legible and compelling visual structure.
Grand Canyon Village, shown near the South Rim, anchors the human geography of the map. Long one of the principal gateways to Grand Canyon National Park, the village developed as a hub for visitors arriving by rail, road, and trail, offering access to overlooks, lodges, ranger facilities, and descent routes into the canyon. The celebrated Bright Angel Trail is among the most important features represented, tracing a historic path from the rim into the inner canyon and linking modern recreation with older Indigenous routes and early tourist infrastructure. Around it, the map reveals a dense network of routes and named features, emphasizing that the canyon is not a single viewpoint but a vast and intricate landscape of movement, exposure, and endurance.
The Colorado River forms the commanding natural axis of the sheet, carving through the canyon floor with a force that defines everything around it. Below the rim, the terrain breaks into labyrinthine side canyons, cliffs, ridges, and benches, each shaped by water, gravity, and time. The map’s shaded relief is especially effective in this environment, giving volume to the steep walls and revealing the relationship between high plateaus and deeply incised drainage systems. The Kaibab Plateau, Nankoweap Creek, and numerous peaks and ridges appear as parts of a larger geological composition, where elevation shifts are not gradual but spectacularly abrupt. This is cartography that makes verticality visible, conveying the Grand Canyon’s overwhelming scale through measured detail.
As a document of the 1960s, the map also preserves a moment in the evolving history of Grand Canyon National Park. It reflects the landscape during an era when automobile tourism, trail use, scientific study, and federal land management were all reshaping public engagement with the canyon. Since then, conservation initiatives, visitor infrastructure, ecological monitoring, and debates over preservation have altered how the region is managed and experienced. Yet the essential geography shown here—the village at the rim, the trails descending into shadow, the Colorado River winding through ancient stone—remains timeless. The “Bright Angel” sheet offers both a scientific record and a refined portrait of one of the world’s defining natural landmarks.

With its rich detail and strong sense of place, this map makes a considered gift for a new home, anniversary, retirement or anyone with a personal connection to the area shown. Still deciding? Explore our collection of rare old and vintage maps to discover another place, period or style.
This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.
For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.
