| 16x12in (40x30cm) | 20x16in (50x40cm) | 24x18in (60x45cm) |
36x24in (90x60cm) |

| 12x16in (30x40cm) | 16x20in (40x50cm) | 18x24in (45x60cm) |
24x36in (60x90cm) |

WeiterlesenPublished in 1953 from mapping created in 1951, the United States Geological Survey’s “Hancock” presents a finely observed portrait of the borderlands around Berkeley Springs, West Virginia, and Hancock, Maryland. At a 1:24,000 scale, it captures the landscape with the precision and restraint characteristic of mid-century federal topographic mapping. The map situates Berkeley Springs within a rugged Appalachian setting, where towns, roads, streams, and ridgelines are drawn into a coherent geographic narrative. Its title, taken from Hancock on the Maryland side of the Potomac River, reflects the quadrangle system rather than a single civic focus, giving equal importance to the surrounding valleys, hills, and crossings that defined daily movement through the region.
Produced by the USGS, this map belongs to a period when American topographic cartography reached an elegant balance between scientific utility and graphic clarity. Contour lines describe the land with quiet authority, revealing the rise and fall of mountainous terrain through careful intervals and subtle elevation cues. Distinct color gradations distinguish water, vegetation, roads, and relief, while labels remain crisp and functional. The result is a map that rewards close reading: elevations around 600 and 800 feet, surveyed control points, stream courses, and minor roads all contribute to a layered understanding of the terrain. It is both a technical document and a graceful visual record of the Appalachian landscape.
The geography shown is shaped above all by water and elevation. The Potomac River forms a commanding natural boundary near Hancock, its valley creating a corridor of settlement, transportation, and commerce. To the west and south, the Great Cacapon River and associated valley systems cut through folded terrain, offering a striking contrast between river bottoms and wooded ridges. Opequon Creek and smaller tributaries add further complexity to the hydrology, while the contouring reveals numerous unnamed hills and hollows typical of West Virginia’s eastern panhandle. Cacapon State Park and the broader upland terrain hint at the region’s recreational and ecological significance, long valued for its springs, forests, and dramatic mountain scenery.
Berkeley Springs appears as one of the principal places on the map, set within a landscape where natural resources and transportation routes have long shaped settlement. Known historically for its mineral springs, the town occupies a distinctive position amid ridges, valleys, and routes connecting West Virginia with Maryland and Pennsylvania. U.S. Route 522 and West Virginia Route 9 are especially important on the map, tracing mid-century road networks through the mountains and toward the Potomac crossing at Hancock. Nearby communities and landmarks, including Hedgesville and the lands associated with Sleepy Creek Wildlife Management Area, help place Berkeley Springs within a broader regional pattern of small towns, rural roads, and conserved uplands.
As a historical document, the “Hancock” quadrangle preserves the region at a moment before later suburban growth, highway expansion, and environmental change altered parts of the landscape. Its early-1950s survey data records road alignments, land use patterns, settlement density, and topographic knowledge as they were understood in the postwar era. For collectors, historians, and admirers of Appalachian geography, the map offers more than orientation; it provides a time capsule of a culturally rich border region. The juxtaposition of Berkeley Springs, Hancock, the Potomac, and the surrounding highlands evokes a place defined by movement between states, by watercourses through ancient mountains, and by the enduring relationship between human settlement and terrain.

With its rich detail and strong sense of place, this map makes a considered gift for a new home, anniversary, retirement or anyone with a personal connection to the area shown. Still deciding? Explore our collection of rare old and vintage maps to discover another place, period or style.
This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.
For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.
