WeiterlesenPublished in 1984 from 1983 survey data, the US Geological Survey’s “Valentine South” presents a precise topographic portrait of the landscape around Valentine, Nebraska, at a revealing moment in the early 1980s. As a provisional USGS map, it belongs to a practical yet deeply evocative cartographic tradition: maps made for navigation, land management, engineering, and scientific understanding, but now rich with historical atmosphere. The sheet records the southern approaches to Valentine, a Sandhills community near the Niobrara River, with roads, settled places, drainage lines, and public lands fixed in meticulous detail. Its original title is admirably direct, yet the map’s contents open onto a wider story of plains settlement, river corridors, conservation, and recreation in north-central Nebraska.
The US Geological Survey brought to this map more than a century of national mapping expertise. Founded in 1879, the USGS became the principal authority for measuring and depicting the American landscape, transforming field surveys, aerial photography, and geodetic control into readable topographic sheets. “Valentine South” reflects that disciplined visual language: contour lines articulate subtle rises and draws, while symbols identify roads, watercourses, boundaries, and developed areas with restrained clarity. The result is a map that is both scientific instrument and landscape portrait. In a region where elevation changes can be gradual rather than dramatic, the cartographer’s careful contouring is especially valuable, revealing the rolling hills, valley forms, and drainage patterns that define the terrain.
Valentine itself is an important focal point, a small city with an outsized relationship to the surrounding landscape. Located in Cherry County, near the northern edge of Nebraska’s Sandhills, Valentine has long served as a gateway to ranch country, river recreation, hunting, fishing, and wildlife observation. The map captures the town and its road connections before later decades of development and changing land use further reshaped the area. Highways and local roads shown here tie Valentine to nearby valleys, public lands, and rural holdings, offering a visual record of movement across a sparsely populated but economically and recreationally significant region. For collectors, that blend of civic detail and open country gives the map a quietly compelling historical resonance.
The Niobrara River is among the most significant natural features associated with this landscape, and its presence gives the area much of its ecological and recreational identity. Designated as a National Scenic River in part because of its unusual biological diversity and striking valley scenery, the Niobrara cuts through a landscape where prairie, woodland, wetlands, and rugged breaks can exist in close proximity. The Valentine area is also closely linked with Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge, established on former military reservation land and now known for bison, elk, prairie dogs, migratory birds, and riparian habitats. Against this background, the map’s lines and symbols become more than technical markings: they describe the framework of a living, protected landscape.
As a topographic work, “Valentine South” is especially engaging for the way it makes modest terrain legible. The contour lines trace hills, slopes, shallow valleys, and drainageways, showing how water and elevation shape routes, settlement, and land use. In the early 1980s, this information would have served hikers, hunters, planners, land managers, and anyone navigating the ranchlands and public spaces near Valentine. Today, the map offers a measured snapshot of place: a record of roads, natural forms, and human occupation at one specific moment. Its understated USGS design rewards close attention, transforming the Valentine region into a finely structured composition of river valleys, rolling ground, transportation corridors, and conservation landscapes.

Every piece is printed to museum-grade archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte paper. Choose an unframed map print, framed map or canvas using the finish options above. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.
With its rich detail and strong sense of place, this map makes a considered gift for a new home, anniversary, retirement or anyone with a personal connection to the area shown. Still deciding? Explore our collection of rare old and vintage maps to discover another place, period or style.
This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.
For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.
