WeiterlesenTitled “Plymouth,” this United States Geological Survey quadrangle presents a richly detailed portrait of central New Hampshire as it stood in 1980, with a 1981 imprint reflecting its formal issue. Drawn at the classic 1:24,000 scale, the map centers on Plymouth, where the Pemigewasset River and the corridors of Route 3 and Interstate 93 shape both settlement and movement through the landscape. It is a technical document, yet also a finely structured image of place: towns, roads, rail lines, brooks, wooded slopes, and open ground are organized through the precise visual language that made USGS topographic mapping indispensable to scientists, planners, hikers, and local historians.
The map’s topographic character is especially compelling, with contour lines revealing the folded terrain of New Hampshire’s Lakes and White Mountains region. Around Plymouth, the land rises and falls in a pattern of hills, valleys, and drainage channels, showing how communities developed along more navigable river corridors. The Pemigewasset River—often called the Pemi—serves as a natural axis, threading through the map and gathering smaller streams such as Cascade Brook. These waterways are not merely decorative details; they explain transportation routes, settlement patterns, mill sites, recreation areas, and the enduring relationship between the town and its surrounding uplands.
Plymouth itself appears as a regional anchor, positioned between the mountain country to the north and the lake country to the south. Nearby Campton, Livermore Falls, Squam Lake, and the wooded areas associated with the White Mountain National Forest evoke a landscape long valued for both utility and escape. By 1980, this area was already shaped by modern infrastructure, yet it retained the rural and recreational character that has defined much of central New Hampshire. The lightly indicated train tracks, major highways, and smaller local roads together capture a transitional geography: one foot in older rail-linked settlement, the other in the automobile era.
The USGS style gives the map its authority and elegance. Contours articulate elevation; blue hydrography marks rivers, lakes, and wetlands; green shading identifies forested areas and vegetation; and black and red linework distinguishes roads, buildings, boundaries, and cultural features. This disciplined color system creates a layered reading experience, allowing the viewer to move from broad regional form to minute local detail. Unlike pictorial or decorative maps, the beauty here lies in measured exactness—the quiet confidence of a map made to be used. Every curve of a contour and every bend in a road contributes to a coherent portrait of terrain.
As a document from the early 1980s, this map preserves a particular moment in the development of Plymouth and its surrounding countryside. It records infrastructure, land use, forest cover, and water features before later decades of expansion, conservation work, road improvement, and recreational development further altered the region. For anyone drawn to New Hampshire history, outdoor exploration, or the cartographic tradition of the US Geological Survey, “Plymouth” offers more than orientation. It is a historical landscape in miniature: a record of rivers and ridges, highways and hamlets, public lands and lived places, all captured with the precision that made USGS quadrangles iconic.

Looking for a particular place? Review the detailed images to confirm that the town, landmark or feature you have in mind appears on the map. If you are unsure, ask our workshop to check before you order.
Detailed maps are especially rewarding at larger sizes, where names, boundaries and decorative features have more room to be appreciated. Use the close-up preview and size guide to choose the right scale for your wall.
This map looks amazing at sizes all the way up to 50in (125cm). If you are looking for a larger map, please get in touch.
The model in the listing images is holding the 16x20in (40x50cm) version of this map.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, mark one meaningful place, or request one considered visual detail. See personalised map examples.
Every piece is printed to museum-grade archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte paper. Choose an unframed map print, framed map or canvas using the finish options above. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.
With its rich detail and strong sense of place, this map makes a considered gift for a new home, anniversary, retirement or anyone with a personal connection to the area shown. Still deciding? Explore our collection of rare old and vintage maps to discover another place, period or style.
This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.
For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.
