WeiterlesenPublished in 2005 from survey work completed in 2002, the U.S. Geological Survey’s “Henrie Knolls” presents a finely detailed 1:24,000 topographical portrait of southern Utah’s high country around Duck Creek Village. Set on the forested Markagunt Plateau, the map captures a landscape defined by elevation, volcanic uplands, winding roads, and access routes leading into the Dixie National Forest. Its title evokes the local prominence of Henrie Knolls, while the broader sheet documents the relationship between settlement, recreation, and rugged terrain. At this scale, the map is intimate enough to show trails, contours, drainage patterns, and developed areas, yet broad enough to situate Duck Creek Village within the larger mountain environment that has shaped its history and appeal.
The U.S. Geological Survey brought to this map more than a century of institutional cartographic discipline. Founded in 1879, the USGS became the authoritative mapper of the American landscape, producing quadrangles that served engineers, foresters, hikers, land managers, scientists, and local communities. “Henrie Knolls” belongs to that tradition of practical precision: a map designed not merely to locate places, but to explain terrain. Its careful contouring, standardized symbols, and measured depiction of roads, trails, and landforms reflect the agency’s commitment to consistency and clarity. By the early twenty-first century, USGS topographic mapping had become an indispensable record of both natural features and human presence, preserving a moment in the evolving geography of Utah’s plateau country.
Duck Creek Village, one of the principal places shown on the map, sits amid a landscape long valued for summer retreats, forest access, and outdoor recreation. The village developed as a mountain community where cabins, roads, and services meet the surrounding wilderness of the Dixie National Forest. On the map, this relationship is visible in the network of routes radiating into wooded uplands, linking residential areas with trails, campgrounds, and scenic backcountry. The cartography quietly records patterns of land use at the beginning of the twenty-first century, offering evidence of development in a region where recreation and conservation often overlap. As such, the map is both a navigational tool and a historical snapshot of a growing high-elevation community.
The topographic character of the sheet is especially compelling. Contour lines gather and spread across the map, describing the rises, knolls, ridges, and slopes that give the area its physical identity. Browns and greens convey altitude, vegetation, and landform variation, while the measured spacing of contour intervals reveals the contrast between gentler plateau surfaces and steeper mountain terrain. The Markagunt Plateau is part of the greater Colorado Plateau province, a region celebrated for its dramatic geology, volcanic history, and high forested tablelands. Even without pictorial embellishment, the USGS style gives the land a sculptural quality, allowing the viewer to read elevation as rhythm, movement, and relief across the mapped surface.
Beyond its immediate usefulness, “Henrie Knolls” carries environmental and historical significance. Maps of this type allow comparison across time, making visible changes in roads, settlement patterns, forest access, land management boundaries, and recreational development. In the Duck Creek Village area, such details are especially meaningful, as the surrounding Dixie National Forest has long balanced timber, wildlife habitat, watershed protection, tourism, and seasonal residence. The map records a particular stage in that balance, with human infrastructure set within a mountainous landscape still dominated by forest and topography. For collectors and historians, it offers a precise and evocative view of southern Utah’s uplands at the turn of the twenty-first century, where community life, public land, and dramatic terrain converge.

Every piece is printed to museum-grade archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte paper. Choose an unframed map print, framed map or canvas using the finish options above. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.
With its rich detail and strong sense of place, this map makes a considered gift for a new home, anniversary, retirement or anyone with a personal connection to the area shown. Still deciding? Explore our collection of rare old and vintage maps to discover another place, period or style.
This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.
For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.

Published in 2005 from survey work completed in 2002, the U.S.
On the map, this relationship is visible in the network of routes radiating into wooded uplands, linking residential areas with trails, campgrounds, and scenic backcountry.
