samson-kina-vintage-advertising-poster-by-j-l-goffart-1921
Samson Kina Vintage Advertising Poster by J.L. Goffart, 1920

J. L. Goffart’s Samson Kina, created in 1920, turns a convivial pause at a football match into an animated advertisement for a branded beverage. Four sportsmen gather prominently in the foreground, glasses raised as they talk and laugh, while the match continues at a distance. Strong reds, warm beige and touches of field green give the scene its immediate graphic force; above it, the name “Samson Kina” sweeps across the poster in flowing script.

Goffart was a Belgian artist active around the turn of the twentieth century, when commercial posters had become a sophisticated meeting point between illustration, typography and public life. Rather than isolate the bottle as a still-life object, he places it within an appealing social narrative. Sport supplies energy and camaraderie, while the carefully positioned crate and glasses make the advertised drink part of the occasion. The result reflects a period in which poster designers increasingly relied upon bold colour, memorable characters and instantly intelligible situations to hold the attention of passers-by.

A closer look

The composition is organised in distinct layers. At the front, the four men form a compact, slightly asymmetric group, their bodies, gestures and patterned clothing sharply articulated against the softer activity behind them. Stripes and contrasting panels enliven their sporting dress, while highlights on faces, limbs and pale fabric create a lively alternation of light and dark. Their glasses establish a repeated motif across the centre of the design, visually linking the figures to one another.

At the lower left, a wooden crate contains a prominently displayed bottle bearing the Samson Kina label, accompanied by smaller glasses. It is both a practical detail and the commercial anchor of the scene. Nearby, a stitched football rests on the grass: an easily overlooked object that clarifies the setting and balances the weight of the crate. Beyond the group, small players and spectators recede across the field, their reduced scale giving the poster a surprising degree of depth despite its broad, flattened areas of colour.

The background softens into muted greens, browns and autumnal tones. Trees frame the sporting ground without distracting from the men, and the relative quietness of this upper distance makes the red accents in the foreground appear still stronger. A narrow blue border holds the various elements together. Across the top, the decorative lettering is not merely a caption: its generous curves contrast with the angular limbs, striped garments and rectangular crate below, completing the poster’s visual hierarchy.

Context and significance

Sport was particularly well suited to early twentieth-century advertising because it offered designers a ready-made language of vigour, fellowship and modern leisure. In Samson Kina, however, the match itself is deliberately secondary. Goffart concentrates on the interval around it—the conversation, the shared drink and the informal sociability at the edge of the field. This shift from sporting action to human exchange distinguishes the poster from a straightforward match scene.

Its appeal lies in that balance between narrative detail and graphic economy. The distant game establishes place, the clustered figures provide character, and the bottle, crate and sweeping brand name communicate the commercial message without overwhelming the episode. Samson Kina remains an engaging example of how Belgian poster art could unite everyday observation with the clarity and colour required of public advertising.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
