old-map-of-otisco-lake-new-york-by-usgs-1943-skaneateles-lake-spafford-tully
Old Map of Otisco Lake, New York by USGS, 1943 – Skaneateles Lake, Spafford & Tully

The “Spafford Quadrangle,” published by the United States Geological Survey in 1943, presents a richly detailed topographical portrait of central New York’s Finger Lakes country. Centered on Otisco Lake and extending toward the shores of Skaneateles Lake, the map captures a landscape shaped by glacial valleys, rolling uplands, cultivated farms, and wooded slopes. At a scale of 1:31,680, it offers an intimate view of roads, trails, streams, settlements, and elevation changes, making the terrain legible in both practical and aesthetic terms. The title itself evokes the quiet rural township of Spafford, set among a region where water, ridge, and field form one of New York’s most distinctive geographical compositions.

The United States Geological Survey brought to this map the precision and disciplined visual language for which its quadrangles are renowned. Established in the late nineteenth century, the USGS became the authoritative mapper of the American landscape, translating survey data into clear, standardized sheets used by engineers, planners, geologists, outdoor travelers, and local historians alike. In the “Spafford Quadrangle,” the agency’s methodical contouring reveals the rise and fall of the Finger Lakes terrain with remarkable clarity. Each line records a measured change in elevation, allowing the viewer to read valleys, ridges, drainage patterns, and shorelines as if the land itself had been carefully etched into the page.

Otisco Lake, one of the smaller Finger Lakes, is the map’s natural centerpiece. Its long, narrow form reflects the glacial processes that carved this region, leaving behind deep troughs later filled with water. The surrounding hills descend toward the lake in folds and terraces, while streams and minor watercourses trace their way through agricultural and forested ground. To the west, Skaneateles Lake appears as part of the broader lake system, famed for its clarity and scenic setting. The inclusion of these waters, rendered in cool blue, gives the map a graceful visual rhythm, contrasting beautifully with the green of wooded areas and the patterned geometry of rural land.

The communities named across the sheet—Spafford, Marietta, Borodino, Fairmount, Tully, and Scipio among them—anchor the map in the lived geography of mid-twentieth-century upstate New York. These places appear not as isolated dots, but as part of a connected rural network of roads, trails, fields, and waterways. The map preserves a moment before many later changes in land use, transportation, and lakeside development reshaped the region. Farms, woodlots, and small settlements dominate the composition, reflecting an older balance between agriculture and recreation. For those familiar with the area today, the map offers an evocative comparison between the historic landscape and the modern Finger Lakes corridor.

Cartographically, the map is especially appealing for its harmonious use of color and contour. Blue water bodies and streams, green woodland areas, and carefully drawn elevation lines combine to create a document that is both technically informative and visually elegant. The undulating terrain of the Finger Lakes region is made immediately apparent: ridgelines, valleys, shore slopes, and drainage basins all emerge through the map’s fine topographic detail. Beyond its practical value, the “Spafford Quadrangle” is a historical record of how the landscape was understood in 1943, preserving the relationship between natural beauty, rural settlement, and scientific mapping at a pivotal moment in American cartographic history.

Cities, towns and places on this map

Otisco Lake

Skaneateles Lake

Spafford

Marietta

Borodino

Fairmount

Tully

Scipio

Surrounding roads and trails

Smaller water bodies and streams

Agricultural fields and forested areas

Historical context & cartographic details

Historical 1:31,680 topographical map based on survey data from 1943

Published by the United States Geological Survey (USGS)

Uses contour lines to indicate elevation changes

Includes color coding to distinguish terrain types, including water bodies, forests, and cultivated land

Green and blue hues highlight natural features

Shows the undulating landscape characteristic of New York’s Finger Lakes region, including valleys and lakes

Reflects early 20th-century geographical understanding and cartographic techniques

Documents an area where land use and development have changed significantly since 1943

Looking for a particular place? Review the detailed images to confirm that the town, landmark or feature you have in mind appears on the map.
