old-map-of-mckinney-texas-by-usgs-1929-plano-princeton-farmersville
Old Map of McKinney, Texas by USGS, 1929 – Plano, Princeton & Farmersville

Published in 1949 from a 1929 topographic survey, McKinney, Texas presents Collin County at a fascinating moment before the full force of postwar suburban expansion transformed the northern edge of Dallas. Centered on McKinney and extending south toward Plano, the map captures a landscape of county seats, market towns, rail connections, farm roads, creeks, and open countryside. Its original title is pleasingly direct, yet the sheet itself is rich with historical texture: a record of settlement patterns, rural infrastructure, and the early geography of communities that would later become part of one of the fastest-growing metropolitan regions in the United States.

The map was produced by the United States Geological Survey, whose topographic sheets became the authoritative visual language of American terrain in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Here, the USGS method is both scientific and elegant: elevation is expressed through contour lines and hachures, while roads, waterways, settlements, and political boundaries are organized with admirable clarity. The 1:62,500 scale gives the map a broad regional sweep without losing the intimacy of local detail. It is the sort of cartography made for engineers, planners, officials, travelers, and landowners, yet today it reads as a beautifully structured historical document.

McKinney appears as the principal focus, a county seat whose historic downtown would remain one of North Texas’s most distinctive civic centers. To the south, Plano is shown before its later emergence as a major suburban and corporate hub, while Princeton, Farmersville, and Culleoka mark the surrounding constellation of smaller communities. The map records the connective tissue between them: local roads, highways, and farm-to-market routes such as FM 3038, tracing how people, crops, goods, and services moved through the region. Seen together, these details evoke a Collin County still defined by agriculture, rail-era town spacing, and the practical geography of rural Texas life.

The topography is especially revealing. North Texas is often imagined as flat, but the contours on this sheet show the subtle rise and fall of the Blackland Prairie, with hilly ground, drainage lines, and shallow valleys shaping settlement and road placement. Streams and rivers thread through the countryside, feeding the wider Trinity River watershed and giving structure to fields, crossings, and communities. Around the Lavon area, the map is particularly evocative, capturing a landscape on the cusp of dramatic alteration as reservoir development would soon reshape the region. Lake Lavon would become one of the defining water features of Collin County, supporting flood control, water supply, and recreation.

As a historical artifact, this map is compelling because it preserves a version of McKinney and Plano that has largely vanished beneath later growth. What were once discrete towns amid farmland are now part of a dense and dynamic urban corridor, yet the older geography remains legible in road alignments, creek courses, downtown grids, and town names. The sheet invites comparison between past and present: open land against subdivisions, rural roads against commuter routes, modest settlements against modern metropolitan scale. Elegant, precise, and quietly dramatic, McKinney, Texas is a portrait of North Texas before its transformation into one of America’s most rapidly evolving regions.

Cities, towns and places on this map

McKinney

Plano

Lake Lavon

Culleoka

Princeton

Farmersville

FM 3038 / Farm to Market Road

Local roads and highways

Small parks and natural features

Streams and rivers in the region

Historical context & cartographic details

Historical 1:62,500 topographical map of the McKinney, Texas area

Dated 1929, with a 1949 imprint

Produced by the US Geological Survey / USGS

Features colorful elevation lines and hachures typical of mid-20th-century USGS topographic maps

Contour lines show elevation changes and the area’s hilly terrain

Reflects land use and geographical features from nearly a century ago

Shows how urbanization and development have transformed the region since the map was created

Looking for a particular place? Review the detailed images to confirm that the town, landmark or feature you have in mind appears on the map.
