elixir-de-kempenaar-vintage-advertising-poster-by-ernest-godfridnon-1911
Elixir De Kempenaar Vintage Advertising Poster by Ernest Godfridnon, 1910

Ernest Godfridnon’s Elixir De Kempenaar, associated with a 1910–1914 publication, turns beverage advertising into a richly staged social scene. Rather than isolating the product against a plain ground, Godfridnon places its bottle at the centre of a crowded table, surrounded by diners caught in animated conversation. Warm orange, russet and deep brown tones run through the horizontal composition, while flashes of white, gold and glassy reflection enliven its darker interior.

The source history also records a date of 1878 for the design, alongside its later association with the period 1910–1914. That chronology places it within the expanding culture of illustrated commercial publicity that bridged the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Godfridnon, a Belgian artist active in this era, worked when posters and advertising images increasingly relied upon bold pictorial storytelling: a product could be made memorable not merely through lettering, but by embedding it within an appealing vision of sociability, prosperity and pleasure.

A closer look

At the centre of the gathering, a man in a dark suit and brilliant white shirt leans into the conversation, his raised hand and lively expression establishing the scene’s rhythm. The surrounding guests respond through glances and gestures, so that the eye travels around the table rather than settling upon a single portrait. At lower left, an auburn-haired woman in a detailed red dress provides one of the strongest areas of colour. Opposite her, another gentleman reclines more casually, cigarette in hand, extending the chain of gestures towards the lower right.

The advertised bottle occupies the table’s visual heart. Its decorative label bears the words “Elixir De Kempenaar”, clearly enough to identify the drink without interrupting the surrounding narrative. Plates and elegant glassware cluster around it, their small highlights punctuating the dense field of warm colour. The bottle is therefore both still-life object and commercial anchor: conversation, food and company appear to radiate around it.

Godfridnon builds depth by setting sharply observed foreground figures against a softer, more indistinct interior. A background figure at the upper right appears to serve or watch the party, while ornate fittings dissolve into shadow along the rear wall. Fine touches reward closer attention—the curls of hair, patterned surfaces, individualised expressions and narrow reflections caught on glass. Softly blended colour and painterly marks temper the forcefulness of the advertisement, giving it the atmosphere of an illustrated dining-room episode.

Context and significance

Elixir De Kempenaar belongs to a moment when commercial art was becoming an increasingly conspicuous part of modern visual culture. Advertising had to communicate quickly, yet designs of this kind could still sustain elaborate figure groups and narrative detail. Here, the elixir is promoted indirectly through association: it belongs to a convivial gathering, surrounded by fashionable dress, attentive service and an abundant table. The composition sells an occasion as much as a beverage.

Its appeal lies in that balance between immediacy and detail. From a distance, the bright shirt, red dress and upright bottle establish a clear graphic hierarchy; at closer range, the varied gestures and expressions create a miniature social drama. Godfridnon’s scene preserves the persuasive language of period advertising while remaining an engaging study of conversation, character and communal enjoyment.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
