ah-there-vintage-drinks-advertising-poster-1887
Ah, There Vintage Drinks Advertising Poster, 1887

Published by Wilson, Wagner & Co. in 1887, Ah, there turns a convivial meal into a compact piece of visual comedy. A moustachioed diner, resplendent in a red coat and checked waistcoat, raises a gleaming beer stein as a goat peers in from the upper left. Their exchanged glances animate the composition: the man appears delighted by his unexpected companion, while the goat’s bright eyes and protruding tongue lend the encounter an air of cheerful mischief. Warm yellows and emphatic reds are set against fresh green foliage, giving the scene the immediate impact associated with popular late nineteenth-century poster design.

The poster belongs to a period when American commercial print culture was expanding rapidly. Publishers such as Wilson, Wagner & Co. produced colourful images intended to catch the eye and communicate their humour at once, drawing upon the broader worlds of illustrated magazines, theatrical imagery and beverage advertising. Advances in colour printing made such richly coloured popular pictures increasingly familiar to a wide audience. Here, anecdotal detail and broad characterisation work together: the title reads almost like a line delivered on stage, fixing the moment as a comic exchange rather than a formal dining scene.

A closer look

The arrangement is deliberately off-centre. The man fills the lower right of the poster, his rounded face, broad smile and substantial moustache framed by the scarlet of his coat. The goat enters diagonally from above, its pale head emerging among trailing green leaves. This opposition creates a lively zigzag across the otherwise light, relatively spare background. The stein occupies the space between the two figures, catching the light in silvery highlights and acting almost as a prop in their wordless conversation.

Beneath this encounter, the table supplies a miniature feast. A fish rests on a plate alongside sausages, bread and garnishes, while utensils and a small condiment holder add touches of domestic specificity. The white tablecloth forms a broad pale interval between the brightly dressed diner and the varied browns, greens and golden tones of the food. These details make the joke more tangible: the goat has not wandered into an abstract setting but into the middle of an abundant meal, where its close attention may not be entirely innocent.

The treatment shifts neatly between bold poster-like shapes and finer descriptive passages. Flat areas of red, yellow and green establish the design from a distance, while closer inspection reveals the pattern of the waistcoat, the modelling of the man’s face, reflections across the stein and the goat’s carefully sharpened expression. In the lower right, the stylised words “AH THERE” function as both caption and punchline. Their placement beside the diner makes the phrase feel spoken, yet its precise addressee—goat, drink or audience—remains comically open.

Context and significance

Ah, there reflects the late nineteenth-century appetite for pictures built around recognisable social types, everyday pleasures and quickly legible jokes. Food and drink provide the scene’s convivial framework, but the humour depends upon the intrusion of the animal and the almost theatrical response it provokes. Rather than constructing deep pictorial space, the design brings figures, table and lettering close to the surface, allowing gesture, colour and expression to carry the narrative.

Its appeal lies in that economy of storytelling. A raised stein, an expectant goat and a richly laid table are enough to suggest an entire comic episode. At once a beverage poster and a small study in popular entertainment, the work preserves the buoyant, direct visual language through which commercial printmakers addressed the audiences of 1887.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
