turkish-cafe-by-august-macke-1914
Turkish Café by August Macke, 1914

August Macke’s Turkish Café, painted in 1914, turns an everyday place of sociability into a compact orchestration of colour. A seated figure in green occupies the centre, viewed from behind and gathered into a few broad, interlocking shapes. Around this quiet human anchor, a yellow chair, a pale blue table and walls of orange, purple and red create an unusually animated setting. The scene remains recognisable, yet description gives way to rhythm: furniture, foliage and architecture are treated less as solid objects than as adjacent fields of luminous colour.

Macke was a leading figure in German Expressionism and closely associated with Der Blaue Reiter, the Munich-based circle that sought new expressive possibilities through colour and simplified form. His work is often distinguished by its pleasure in modern life: promenades, shop windows, gardens and cafés become occasions for exploring the movement of figures through vivid environments. Turkish Café belongs to the final year of his brief career, a period that also included his 1914 journey to Tunisia with Paul Klee and Louis Moilliet. Macke died later that year during the opening months of the First World War, leaving this radiant phase of experimentation abruptly curtailed.

A closer look

The composition is shallow and closely packed, drawing the café’s elements towards the picture plane. At the centre, the sitter’s green clothing is broken by touches of red, while a dark, hat-like form crowns the head. Because the figure faces away, attention shifts from facial expression to posture, silhouette and colour. The body becomes part of the surrounding pattern, its curved contours set against the straighter divisions of walls, doorway and furniture.

On the right, the light blue tabletop carries two small cups. Their modest scale and clear placement provide one of the scene’s most legible details, while the table’s curved support introduces a decorative counterpoint to the angular yellow chair at the left. These objects do not construct a conventionally deep interior. Instead, they overlap and abut one another, creating the sense of an intimate, enclosed space assembled through colour contrasts rather than linear perspective.

Across the upper edge, branches and green leaves form a loose canopy, suggesting that the café opens onto an outdoor or garden setting. The foliage ranges from deep green to lighter, yellow-inflected tones and casts an irregular network over the more architectural shapes below. Behind it, orange and purple passages surround a blue door-like form. Warm and cool colours continually exchange emphasis: yellow flares beside green, pale blue rests against red, and earthy notes temper the more saturated areas. Visible brushwork prevents these shapes from becoming entirely flat, giving the surface a lively, tactile pulse.

Context and significance

Within Der Blaue Reiter, colour was understood as more than a means of copying appearances; it could structure a composition and intensify experience in its own right. Macke’s approach was notably open and lucid. Rather than pushing the café towards drama or psychological unease, he organises it as a harmonious encounter between modern leisure, decorative pattern and human presence. The seated customer is both an individual and a formal element within the surrounding mosaic.

That balance gives Turkish Café its distinctive character. The cups, chair and leafy canopy preserve the specificity of a lived moment, but Macke’s simplification lifts the scene beyond straightforward reportage. What first appears bright and spontaneous reveals a carefully controlled arrangement: a secluded figure, a compressed setting and a succession of colours that make stillness feel quietly energetic.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
