h-clausen-son-vintage-bock-beer-poster-1879
H. Clausen & Son Vintage Bock Beer Poster, 1879

H. Clausen & Son. Bock Beer (1879), created by the American firm Wittemann Bros., turns a brewery advertisement into a spirited display of strength, abundance and visual wit. At its centre, a muscular, smiling youth hoists a substantial beer barrel while a shaggy goat balances above him. The improbable arrangement rises through the vertical composition like a commercial monument, surrounded by curling foliage, ingredient sacks and emphatic lettering in warm browns and golds, with touches of green and white sharpening the design.

Created in 1876 and published in 1879, this chromolithograph belongs to a period in which increasingly sophisticated commercial printing allowed advertisers to compete through brilliant colour and elaborate graphic identities. Breweries were especially well suited to such treatment: barrels, hops, malt and heraldic lettering could communicate both the substance of the drink and the standing of its maker. The goat is more than an entertaining mascot. “Bock” is also the German word for a male goat, giving brewers and designers a ready-made visual pun that became closely associated with advertisements for this style of beer.

A closer look

The composition is organised as a rising chain of motifs. At the base, weighty sacks and smaller blocks of information establish the practical world of brewing and distribution. Above them, the central figure braces beneath the barrel, his bent limbs and exaggerated musculature modelled with areas of darker shading. His broad smile prevents the feat from appearing laborious: the pose reads instead as a theatrical demonstration of vigour. Golden highlights along the barrel draw attention to the product at the very point where the human figure and goat meet.

At the upper centre, the goat provides a contrasting silhouette. Its fur is picked out with pronounced outlines and a more irregular texture than the smooth limbs and rounded barrel below. Delicate vines and leafy forms frame this upper section, while the word “HOPS” appears within the ornament, integrating an ingredient of beer into the decorative scheme. These natural motifs soften the poster’s forceful geometry and connect its promotional language to the raw materials of brewing.

Typography controls the viewer’s progress through the crowded design. “H. CLAUSEN & SON” establishes the brewer at the top, while the large, ornate words “Bock Beer” act as the principal verbal anchor lower down. Further lettering identifies “BREWERY. 1879. NEW YORK.” and names “G.W. & C.R. MILLER BOSTON. SOLE AGENTS.” Rather than separating information from illustration, Wittemann Bros. weave the two together: lettering, vines, figures, barrel and sacks form a single ornamental structure. Strong contrasts between the dark central figure and the lighter ground preserve clarity despite the density of detail.

Context and significance

Late nineteenth-century advertising occupied a fertile space between information and spectacle. A poster needed to state the brewer’s name, the product and its agents, yet it also had to hold attention in a busy urban marketplace. Here, factual details are embedded within a humorous fantasy of physical power. The barrel becomes a pedestal, the youth a showman and the goat both emblem and pun. Even the ingredient sacks contribute to the message, lending the exuberant scene an undercurrent of material credibility.

The poster is particularly revealing of the period’s appetite for richly decorative commercial printmaking. Its flat colour areas, firm contours and layered motifs make the message legible from a distance, while the fur, vines, shaded limbs and creased sacks reward closer inspection. Wittemann Bros. thus gave H. Clausen & Son’s beer a memorable visual personality: robust, convivial and unmistakably tied to the goat imagery of bock.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
