f-klemm-s-vintage-bock-beer-poster-1880
F. Klemm’s Vintage Bock Beer Poster, 1880

F. Klemm’s Bock, produced by A. Hoen & Co. in 1880, turns a beer advertisement into a crowded miniature spectacle. At its centre, a large horned goat stands commandingly upon a barrel, while a decorated cart below bears the word “BOCK” in emphatic lettering. Around this improbable mascot unfolds an outdoor celebration of raised mugs, laden tables, stacked casks and animated figures. Earthy browns and deep reds give the scene warmth, sharpened by bright greens, touches of blue and flashes of white and yellow.

The goat is more than a memorable emblem: “Bock” is both the name of a strong German beer and the German word for a male goat, an association frequently exploited in brewing imagery. Here the visual pun becomes the organising principle of the entire design. Made for the Baltimore brewer F. Klemm, the print belongs to a period when American lithographic firms were bringing increasingly elaborate colour, narrative and decorative display to commercial advertising. Rather than merely naming the product, A. Hoen & Co. creates a complete festive world around it.

A closer look

The composition is carefully arranged to ensure that the central animal remains dominant despite the wealth of incident. Its curved horns and richly worked coat stand out against the softer, busier background, while the barrel beneath it provides a solid platform. Immediately below, the cart creates a second horizontal focal point. Its ornamental framing encloses the bold word “BOCK”, making the lettering part of the illustration rather than a detached caption.

Beyond this central group, the scene expands in overlapping layers. To the right, patrons gather at a long table amid barrels and foliage; gestures, mugs and food suggest a convivial open-air occasion. At lower left, a cluster of excited children introduces a playful counterpoint to the adult festivities. The figures are small but individually animated, their varied costumes and patterned garments contributing to the poster’s densely populated character. Circular marks on the cask ends, leafy greens and small highlights on clothing reward closer attention without distracting from the principal message.

The background adds an industrial note to the merriment. At upper left, a factory-like complex with smoking chimneys rises behind the trees, linking the celebratory consumption of beer to its production. Spatial depth is created chiefly through overlap: the goat and cart occupy a shallow, forceful foreground, while the revellers, barrels, trees and buildings recede in softer tones. Across the top, “F. KLEMM’S” establishes the brand name; along the lower edge, “BALTIMORE, MD.” anchors the advertisement geographically. Together, these inscriptions form a clear hierarchy around the central pictorial joke.

Context and significance

A. Hoen & Co. was a Baltimore printing firm closely associated with American commercial lithography. By the late nineteenth century, colour printing had allowed advertisements and product labels to become far more pictorially ambitious. Brewers were among the businesses that benefited from this development: in a competitive urban market, recognisable mascots, ornate typography and scenes of sociability could give a brand a distinct visual identity.

F. Klemm’s Bock is especially engaging because it refuses the simplicity of a conventional label. The product name is reinforced through humour, pageantry and an abundance of observed detail, from the goat’s textured fur to the tiny gathering around the tables. Its combination of direct branding and narrative bustle reveals how nineteenth-century advertising could operate simultaneously as information, entertainment and decorative graphic art.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
