vintage-bock-beer-poster-by-henry-jerome-schile-1885
Vintage Bock Beer Poster by Henry Jerome Schile, 1885

Henry Jerome Schile’s Bock Beer, original Bavarian beer girl & bock, dated 1885, turns a drinks advertisement into a buoyant piece of theatrical display. A smiling beer maiden occupies the centre, raising two foam-topped mugs while a dark, long-horned goat presses close beside her. Her pale, ornamented costume stands out against the animal’s deep brown-black coat, and the emphatic words “BOCK BEER” anchor the scene in large decorative lettering below.

Created at a time when American breweries and taverns were making increasing use of illustrated promotional imagery, Schile’s design belongs to a developing visual culture of commercial branding. Its appeal rests partly on a romanticised version of Bavarian identity: traditional dress, plentiful beer and cheerful hospitality are compressed into an immediately recognisable “old-world” tableau. The goat adds more than comic character. “Bock” is also the German word for a male goat, so the animal functions as a visual pun on the beer’s name—a memorable emblem requiring no lengthy explanation.

A closer look

The maiden’s pose is carefully organised for maximum clarity. Her face and upper body form the brightest area of the composition, framed by softly curled hair and delicate ruffles at the collar. A vivid yellow floral ornament punctuates the lighter fabric, while touches of red and gold enliven the otherwise warm brown-and-cream palette. Each hand supports a substantial glass mug, held high enough for the pale beer and generous white froth to read at once.

Beside her, the bock goat provides a darker and more textural counterweight. Its sweeping horns rise into the upper part of the design, echoing the curves of the maiden’s arms and hair, while fine marks around the muzzle and coat give the animal a more naturalistic presence. An ornamental collar introduces another decorative note. The goat stands slightly behind the figure, creating a modest sense of depth without disturbing the poster’s essentially frontal, emblematic arrangement.

The eye eventually drops to the broad title panel at the lower edge. The words “BOCK BEER” are not treated as a secondary caption but as part of the spectacle: bold, ornate and bordered, they complete the visual hierarchy established by the raised mugs above. A softly graded background keeps the central pairing legible, while the thin surrounding border contains the abundant detail. Particularly effective is the contrast between the smooth passages of bright colour and the denser modelling of hair, costume and fur.

Context and significance

Schile, an American artist born in 1829, worked within a nineteenth-century commercial environment in which pictures increasingly helped products establish a distinct personality. Before modern advertising settled into its later conventions, images such as this relied on easily understood characters, visual jokes and conspicuous lettering. The beer maiden personifies convivial service; the mugs identify the commodity; and the goat transforms the name into a mascot. Together, these elements make the message readable at a glance while rewarding closer attention with costume details and decorative flourishes.

The design also reveals how German beer culture was presented to an American audience through an idealised language of regional tradition. Rather than describing a specific place or everyday scene, it offers a concentrated fantasy of Bavarian hospitality. That combination of portrait-like charm, humorous symbolism and forceful typography gives Schile’s poster its enduring interest: it is at once an advertisement, a period image of cultural identity and a deft example of how nineteenth-century graphic art made a brand memorable.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
