lowenbrauerei-bohmisches-brauhaus-vintage-bock-beer-poster-by-georg-rader-1912
Löwenbrauerei Böhmisches Brauhaus Vintage Bock Beer Poster by Georg Räder, 1912

Georg Räder’s Bockbier Löwenbrauerei Böhmisches Brauhaus, dated 1912, turns a beer advertisement into a spirited piece of visual theatre. A grinning, yellow-haired boy raises a foaming mug beside a white, curved-horned goat, their bright forms sharply isolated against a black ground. Scarlet, yellow, blue and white are deployed in emphatic blocks, while the oversized word “Bockbier” crowns the composition with the directness of a shouted announcement.

Created by the German artist Georg Räder, this lithographic poster belongs to an era in which breweries increasingly relied on memorable printed imagery to establish a recognisable public identity. Its goat is more than a picturesque companion: the animal was closely associated with Bock beer through the German word Bock, meaning a male goat, and consequently became a familiar visual motif in the drink’s advertising. Räder makes that association immediate, combining the animal with a jovial character, a prominently displayed mug and lettering legible at a glance.

A closer look

The composition is carefully balanced despite its boisterous mood. The boy occupies the centre-left, leaning into the scene with one arm raised and the other positioned close to his body. His pointed red hat, bright hair and polished red shoes create a sequence of warm accents around the cooler blue of his shirt and the grey of his overalls. A contrasting patch on the garment introduces a small note of comic scruffiness, reinforcing his character as a mischievous advertising figure rather than a naturalistically observed child.

At the lower right, the goat provides both a pale counterweight and a secondary focus. Its white coat stands out crisply against the dark background, while subtle markings suggest the texture of fur. The horns curve back from its head as it looks towards the boy, establishing a lively exchange between the two figures. Although the forms are broadly simplified, touches such as the boy’s exaggerated smile, the highlights on his shoes and the suggestion of a shadow beneath him lend the scene just enough volume to keep it from appearing entirely flat.

Typography forms an essential part of the design rather than merely supplying information. “Bockbier” stretches across the upper field in bold, high-contrast lettering, creating the poster’s clearest verbal cue. Below the figures, “Löwenbrauerei–Böhmisches Brauhaus” anchors the composition in blocky type. The eye therefore travels from product name to raised mug and comic protagonists, before settling on the brewery’s identity—a concise graphic hierarchy suited to public display.

Context and significance

By the early twentieth century, beverage posters had become a particularly inventive field of commercial art. Improvements in colour lithography allowed advertisers to use saturated hues, large lettering and strongly simplified silhouettes with considerable impact. Such posters needed to communicate rapidly in streets, cafés and other busy settings; Räder’s limited depth, uncluttered background and theatrical colour contrasts answer that requirement with remarkable economy.

Yet the design is not purely functional. Its humour lies in the pairing of a cheerful, almost storybook figure with the heraldic-looking goat, while the brilliant palette gives both the immediacy of stage characters caught under a spotlight. The result is an engaging record of early twentieth-century advertising culture: direct in message, disciplined in construction and full of the playful personality through which breweries sought to make their names memorable.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
