val-blatz-s-premium-export-vintage-lager-beer-poster-1879
Val. Blatz’s Premium Export Vintage Lager Beer Poster, 1879

Wittemann Bros.’ Val. Blatz’s Premium Export, Milwaukee Lager Beer, dated 1879, turns a brewery advertisement into a richly layered spectacle of conviviality and industry. A jovial, broad-set figure raises a foaming beer stein in the foreground, his animated presence framed by emphatic red lettering, gold ornament and a busy view of the brewery below. The poster’s argument is immediate: pleasure and good fellowship are placed before the eye, while the buildings, carts and smoking chimneys provide visible evidence of scale, productivity and commercial confidence.

Created when colour lithography was transforming American advertising, the design belongs to a period in which businesses increasingly relied upon memorable trade images to distinguish their names in crowded urban markets. Milwaukee was closely associated with lager brewing in the nineteenth century, a reputation shaped in large part by the city’s German immigrant communities and the growth of large commercial breweries. Here, that identity is conveyed through a calculated mixture of character, spectacle and brand typography. Wittemann Bros. present Val. Blatz’s not simply as a drink, but as the product of an established modern enterprise.

A closer look

The eye first meets the name “VAL. BLATZ’S”, set across the upper section in large, decorative red letters. Its scale gives the wording the force of an architectural feature, while floral embellishments and gold accents soften the commercial directness with a sense of ceremony. Beneath it, the smaller word “EXPORT” acts as a compact badge of status. At the bottom, “MILWAUKEE LAGER BEER” returns in contrasting red, anchoring the elaborate imagery between two clear statements of identity.

The central drinker supplies the poster’s human warmth. His stein is held aloft in a gesture that reads at once as toast, endorsement and invitation. Bright highlights across his clothing and the beer stand against deeper browns and shadowed greys, helping his figure project forward from the surrounding scene. Fine lines in his face and garments lend him a lively, almost theatrical personality; he is less a portrait than a persuasive advertising character, embodying abundance and sociability.

Below this genial figure, the composition changes register. A detailed brewery complex extends across the lower section, its roofs, windows and tall chimneys rendered with close attention. Carts and small figures suggest movement at ground level, while coils of smoke animate the skyline. The contrast is effective: the drinker is large, colourful and immediate, whereas the brewery is intricate and panoramic. Medals and awards positioned to one side add another layer to the sales message, using the visual language of official distinction to reinforce the product’s standing. A decorative gold border gathers these varied elements into a single ornate frame.

Context and significance

Nineteenth-century beverage advertising often balanced two kinds of appeal: the emotional promise of refreshment and fellowship, and the reassuring image of manufacture on an impressive scale. This poster does both. The raised stein makes the beer desirable, while the industrial panorama makes the business appear dependable. Even the palette contributes to that dual message: warm reds, browns and beige tones create an atmosphere of comfort, while flashes of gold lend the brand an air of prestige.

Seen today, the design offers a vivid record of how breweries cultivated public identity before modern corporate branding became standardised. Its dense ornament, assertive lettering and miniature industrial narrative reveal advertising as a form of visual storytelling—one in which a name, a character and an entire place of production could be compressed into a single persuasive composition.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
