pollet-et-vittet-vintage-chocolate-poster-by-henri-meunier-1896
Pollet et Vittet Vintage Chocolate Poster by Henri Meunier, 1896

Henri Meunier’s Pollet Et Vittet, created in 1896, turns the simple act of pouring chocolate into a sharply composed piece of commercial theatre. A woman appears in profile against an uninterrupted orange ground, her face, hands and flowing hair arranged around the descending stream from jug to cup. Above her, the name “POLLET ET VITTET” is set in emphatic yellow lettering; below, the darker inscription “CHOCOLATERIE de PEPINSTER” anchors the design and identifies the Belgian chocolatier being advertised.

The poster belongs to a flourishing period of late nineteenth-century Belgian graphic art, when advertising offered artists a newly prominent public canvas. Meunier worked amid the development of Art Nouveau and modern print culture, both of which encouraged the integration of lettering, ornament and figure into a single coherent design. Here, commercial clarity and decorative invention are inseparable: the product is communicated immediately, yet the image possesses the economy and rhythmic line of an independent graphic composition.

A closer look

The woman’s profile forms the poster’s principal contour. Her hair sweeps backwards in broad, undulating strands, introducing movement into an otherwise deliberately flat arrangement. Small highlights and internal lines give the hair a degree of texture without disturbing the design’s bold simplicity. Her delicately positioned hands continue the composition downwards, creating a diagonal passage from face to jug, and then from the pouring chocolate to the waiting cup.

Colour performs much of the visual work. The saturated orange background establishes an enveloping warmth, while the pale blue cup, saucer and serving vessel provide a cool, crisp counterpoint. Brown is reserved for the chocolate and the lower typography, linking the advertised drink to the poster’s textual foundation. Rather than modelling the figure through elaborate shadows, Meunier relies on clean outlines and clearly separated areas of colour. The result is direct enough to be read at a glance, but sufficiently controlled to reward closer attention.

The typography is not merely added around the illustration. The upper lettering occupies the same vivid field as the figure, its block-like forms balancing the curves of her hair and face. At the bottom, “CHOCOLATERIE de PEPINSTER” stretches across the width of the composition like a base, giving the vertically oriented poster structural stability. A restrained border contains the orange field, while the near absence of background detail prevents anything from competing with the name, the figure and the act of pouring.

Context and significance

During the 1890s, the illustrated poster became one of the most visible meeting points between art and everyday commerce. Artists could use simplified silhouettes, compressed space and forceful colour relationships to address passers-by directly, while manufacturers acquired an identity more memorable than text alone could provide. Pollet Et Vittet is characteristic of this culture without becoming narratively elaborate: it presents chocolate through gesture, colour and stylish domestic ritual rather than through a crowded scene.

The reference to Pepinster gives the design a precise geographical footing, connecting its sophisticated graphic language to a Belgian commercial enterprise. What remains especially engaging is Meunier’s balance of appetite and abstraction. The warm palette suggests the richness of the drink, yet the poster’s lasting force comes from its formal discipline—the graceful profile, the suspended pour and the carefully measured exchange between curved figure and emphatic lettering.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
