biere-de-maxeville-vintage-beer-poster-1912
Bière de Maxéville Vintage Beer Poster, 1912

Bière de Maxéville. C’est toujours la meilleure, produced by Imp. P. Vercasson & Cie in 1912, turns a glass of beer into a scene of exuberant good humour. A white-moustached man in a straw hat and pale coat raises a brimming mug, smiling beneath a personified sun whose animated face and radiating golden rays echo the drink’s amber colour. Behind him, the field divides sharply between vivid green and deep navy blue, giving the poster the instant clarity needed to command attention at a distance.

The design belongs to the lively culture of French commercial lithography in the years immediately before the First World War. Posters competed for notice in streets, cafés and shop windows, where a message had to be understood quickly and remembered easily. Here, recognisable character, forceful lettering and emphatic colour work together as a single advertising argument. The slogan, “C’est toujours la meilleure” — “It is always the best” — makes no elaborate case for the beer; its breezy confidence is the point.

A closer look

The central figure is placed slightly to the left, allowing his raised mug to project into the poster’s busier upper half. His rounded face, white moustache and broadly drawn smile establish an affable, almost theatrical personality. Strong outlines keep the figure legible against the divided background, while restrained modelling around the face and clothing prevents him from becoming entirely flat. The straw hat introduces a band of warm beige and orange, linking the man visually to both the beer and the sun.

The mug receives unusually attentive treatment within this simplified composition. Its transparent sides are indicated through pale reflections, while bubbles and a dense crown of foam make the beer appear cold and freshly poured. These small descriptive details contrast with the broad colour fields elsewhere. Above, the smiling sun has a comic, mask-like face encircled by pointed rays; small droplets or marks around it amplify the sense of heat, making the foaming drink below seem still more refreshing.

Typography controls the movement of the eye. “Bière de MAXÉVILLE” occupies the upper centre in large, block-like forms, with the place-name carrying particular visual weight. The lower slogan spreads across the navy ground in brilliant yellow, where the warm lettering achieves maximum contrast. A loosely described area of foliage at the left introduces an outdoor note without distracting from the product. Throughout, the interplay of lime green, golden yellow, orange and dark blue produces a design that is energetic but remarkably economical.

Context and significance

By 1912, the commercial poster had become a prominent feature of modern urban visual culture. Advances in colour printing had encouraged advertisers to use larger fields of saturated colour, simplified silhouettes and memorable mascots rather than rely on dense explanatory text. Imp. P. Vercasson & Cie’s design demonstrates that economy particularly well: the consumer proposition is distilled into a cheerful drinker, a radiant day and a glass rendered at its most appetising.

The poster also shows how advertising could borrow the appeal of caricature and popular illustration. Its jovial spokesman and anthropomorphic sun do more than decorate the slogan; they give the brand a sociable, approachable character. More than a century later, the design remains engaging because its humour and graphic hierarchy are so immediate: face, beer, name and claim are delivered in a sequence that can be grasped almost at a glance.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
