vintage-bock-beer-poster-by-henry-jerome-schile-1881
Vintage Bock Beer Poster by Henry Jerome Schile, 1881

Henry Jerome Schile’s Bock Bier of 1881 turns a beer advertisement into a miniature comic pageant. At its centre, a crowned figure in a richly coloured red robe sits enthroned upon a wooden barrel, raising a glass above the emphatic words ‘BOCK BEER’. Goats, attendant figures and theatrical accessories crowd around this self-appointed monarch, while saturated orange, brown and gold are set against a cooler sky of pale blue and cream. The result is less a straightforward still life than a lively visual joke: the drink presides over its own eccentric court.

Schile, an American artist born in 1829, worked at a time when printed advertising was becoming an increasingly prominent part of nineteenth-century visual culture. Manufacturers and retailers needed pictures that could seize attention quickly, and beverage imagery proved especially suited to bold colour, memorable characters and convivial humour. The goats here are more than decorative mascots. In German, Bock means a male goat, an association that gave brewers and advertisers an immediately recognisable visual pun for bock beer. Schile builds the entire composition around that play between name, animal and product.

A closer look

The central figure supplies the poster’s visual hierarchy. His crown and robe lend him the authority of a ceremonial ruler, yet his throne is an ordinary beer barrel, its curved staves and wood grain carefully indicated. The bold lettering across the barrel performs two functions at once: it names the beverage and forms a strong graphic block at the heart of the scene. Highlights across the robe, glass and barrel introduce touches of volume without diminishing the design’s crisp, direct character.

On either side, the arrangement becomes more animated. Two goats flank the beer king, their alert faces and textured coats giving them distinct personalities rather than reducing them to heraldic emblems. At lower left, a man in a hat leans into the action with a horn, his pose contributing an almost processional note. Opposite him, a smiling child dressed in yellow holds up a glass. These outward-facing gestures radiate from the seated figure and keep the eye circulating through the densely populated lower half of the design.

The upper background is comparatively open. Softly contoured clouds and a pale blue gradient provide breathing space around the crown and heads, sharpening their silhouettes against the sky. Warm foreground colours advance visually, while cooler, more muted tones recede; overlapping bodies, animals and objects create further layers of depth. Near the bottom edge, a decorative golden wheel adds another curious flourish, easily missed amid the more immediate spectacle of horns, hooves and raised glasses.

Context and significance

Bock Bier belongs to a period in which commercial imagery often borrowed the devices of popular illustration: caricature, costume, anthropomorphic animals and condensed narrative. Rather than explaining the beer through extensive text, Schile gives it a cast of characters and a comic mythology. The king communicates distinction, the assembled company suggests festivity, and the goats make the product name memorable. Typography is embedded within the scene rather than separated from it, allowing the advertisement to be read almost instantaneously.

What gives the design its continuing interest is this union of practical promotion and exuberant invention. Every element points back towards the beer, yet the advertisement retains the crowded charm of a theatrical tableau. It offers a particularly engaging glimpse of late nineteenth-century advertising before modern branding settled into more restrained formulas: direct in its message, but delightfully extravagant in the telling.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
