la-raphaelle-vintage-liqueur-poster-by-j-rosetti-1865
La Raphaëlle Vintage Liqueur Poster by J. Rosetti, 1865

J. Rosetti’s Créée en 1865. La Raphaelle. Liqeur Bonal (1908) turns an advertisement for Bonal liqueur into a comic moment of suspended action. Against an intense blue ground, a red-haired waiter in black clothes and a white apron throws up both hands towards a bottle poised above him. Large yellow lettering announces “LA RAPHAËLLE”, while the claim “Créée en 1865” gives the drink an air of established pedigree. The result is immediate and theatrical: product, performer and slogan are bound together in a single upward sweep.

The design belongs to a period in which commercial posters increasingly relied on concentrated colour, memorable characters and bold lettering to command attention in busy public settings. Rather than offering a sober account of the beverage, Rosetti constructs a miniature spectacle around it. Heritage is supplied by the prominently stated date of 1865; modern energy comes from the diagonal arrangement, exaggerated gesture and curious machinery overhead. Such advertising transformed a brand name into a visual event, associating an everyday drink with wit, novelty and sociable pleasure.

A closer look

The waiter occupies the central foreground, his dark costume forming a strong silhouette against the saturated blue. His pale face and hands stand out sharply, and his startled expression is amplified by the spread of his fingers and the tilt of his head. Even the white apron contributes to the movement: its folds interrupt the black clothing and suggest a body caught suddenly off balance. Below, a tray bearing drinking vessels anchors the scene in the rituals of service, while a small cast shadow beneath the glass lends depth to an otherwise deliberately flat, graphic composition.

Above him, the bottle labelled “La Raphaëlle” becomes the focus of both his gesture and the poster’s converging diagonals. Nearby is an intricate, machine-like contraption whose precise identity is less important than the impression of ingenious motion it introduces. At the upper left, a crescent moon with a human face watches the episode, adding a note of fantasy. These details keep the eye travelling through the upper portion of the design, where the product appears almost airborne rather than conventionally displayed.

Typography provides the poster’s structural framework. The yellow words blaze against the deep blue field with exceptional clarity, their scale making the brand legible before the smaller illustrative details have been absorbed. Black accents ground this high-contrast palette, while the bottle label and finer lines reward closer inspection. Rosetti balances advertising directness with visual eccentricity: the name remains unmistakable, yet the moon, animated figure and improbable action ensure that it is remembered as part of a story.

Context and significance

Vintage beverage advertising often sold more than flavour. It suggested refinement, conviviality and confidence in the manufacturer, qualities reinforced here by the phrase “Créée en 1865”. The historical date functions as part of the graphic persuasion, presenting Bonal as an established name even as the composition embraces the speed and novelty associated with modern commercial imagery. The contrast between tradition and visual exuberance is central to the poster’s appeal.

What distinguishes Rosetti’s design is its refusal to let the bottle sit passively. Everything reaches towards it: the waiter’s gaze, his raised arms, the diagonals of the upper apparatus and the hierarchy of the lettering. Advertising becomes performance, with a limited palette and a few sharply chosen elements producing a scene that is playful, strange and remarkably concise.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
