forum-vintage-aperitif-poster-1925
Forum Vintage Aperitif Poster, 1925

Forum votre Aperitif, created by an anonymous designer in 1925, centres its entire appeal on a monumental red bottle rising through clusters of purple grapes. The brand name, “FORUM”, appears twice: first on the bottle’s green label and again in emphatic red capitals across the foot of the composition. Set against a muted green ground and enclosed by a narrow red border, the arrangement is immediate and economical, with colour, lettering and simplified form working together to make the product legible at a glance.

The poster belongs to the expanding culture of commercial advertising between the world wars, when brands increasingly relied on memorable graphic identities rather than lengthy explanation. Aperitifs were closely associated with the social rituals of cafés, bars and pre-dinner leisure, and this design presents Forum as both refreshment and spectacle. Its vivid palette and enlarged central bottle transform an everyday beverage into a polished emblem of modern sociability, while the French phrase “votre apéritif” gives the message the directness of a personal recommendation: “your aperitif”.

A closer look

The bottle dominates the vertical format, its tall silhouette establishing a strong central axis. A slight highlight near the neck suggests the reflective surface of glass, but most of the form is treated as a broad, saturated field of red. The green label interrupts this expanse sharply. At its centre is a small stylised figure with raised arms, an animated detail that introduces a note of celebration and vitality without distracting from the brand name above it.

Around the bottle, the grapes form an irregular, almost theatrical frame. Their deep violet and purple tones are enriched by small glossy highlights, while subtle changes of shade prevent the clusters from reading as a single flat mass. Some press closely against the bottle; others extend into the upper part of the poster, creating a layered effect despite the deliberately shallow pictorial space. Faded leafy forms in the top corners soften the otherwise forceful geometry and connect the fruit to the pale green background.

The typography completes the composition rather than merely captioning it. The large “FORUM” at the bottom is broad, red and assertive, visually echoing the bottle above. Beneath it, “VOTRE APÉRITIF” appears at a smaller scale, establishing a clear hierarchy between brand and message. The alternation of thick and fine strokes lends the lettering a decorative quality while preserving the rapid readability essential to a commercial poster.

Context and significance

By the 1920s, poster design had become a prominent feature of urban visual culture. Advertisements needed to command attention amid busy streets and competing notices, encouraging designers to favour compressed compositions, strong tonal contrasts and lettering that could be recognised from a distance. Forum votre Aperitif demonstrates that logic particularly clearly: there is no interior, drinking scene or elaborate narrative, only the bottle, its fruit associations and a concise verbal claim.

Yet the design is not purely functional. The contrast between warm red, cool purple and softened green gives it a distinctive chromatic rhythm, while the asymmetrical distribution of the grapes keeps the rigidly centred bottle from feeling static. The result is a compact example of interwar advertising at its most visually assured—bold enough for the street, but full of small refinements in highlight, spacing and graphic balance.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
