f-klemm-s-vintage-bock-beer-poster-1881
F. Klemm’s Vintage Bock Beer Poster, 1880

F. Klemm’s Bock, made by A. Hoen & Co. in 1880, turns a beer advertisement into an elaborate visual joke. A bespectacled, goat-headed gentleman occupies the centre-left, formally dressed in a striped suit and holding a foaming mug, while a smaller goat stands beside a wooden barrel to his right. Across the lower portion, the word “BOCK” appears in emphatic white lettering against a deep brown circular field; above, “F. Klemm’s” is announced in vivid red. The result is at once theatrical, humorous and immediately legible.

The goats are more than comic decoration. Bock is a strong beer style of German origin, and the German word Bock also means a male goat. Brewers and advertisers repeatedly exploited this linguistic connection, making the animal an instantly recognisable emblem for the drink. Here, the pun is extended through anthropomorphism: the principal goat is not merely a mascot but a prosperous, discerning customer, complete with spectacles, buttons and a carefully tailored suit. Such character-led imagery suited the increasingly competitive world of late nineteenth-century commercial advertising, in which a memorable figure could give a beverage its own distinct personality.

A closer look

The dominant figure is built from contrasts. His carefully observed goat’s head, with its shaded fur and alert features, emerges above the disciplined vertical stripes of his brown suit. Small highlights on the spectacles and mug lend a glint of realism to an otherwise fantastical character. His pose has an air of deliberation: rather than appearing caught in noisy celebration, he seems to contemplate or savour the drink, lending the joke a note of mock seriousness.

To the right, the smaller goat and barrel create a secondary scene and prevent the central character from becoming a solitary emblem. The barrel’s curved hoops and visible wood-grain texture bring a robust, tactile form into the composition, while the animal beside it repeats the principal motif in natural rather than humanised form. Overlapping silhouettes and soft shadows establish just enough depth to separate the figures, yet the cream-coloured background remains largely unoccupied. That restraint keeps attention firmly on the mascot, barrel and lettering.

Colour performs much of the poster’s organising work. Warm browns run through the suit, animals and barrel, set against areas of cream, beige and muted grey. The orange-red wording at the top provides the sharpest accent, while the circular brown field beneath anchors the composition and gives “BOCK” the force of a label or trademark. Detailed modelling is therefore balanced by a simple graphic hierarchy: advertiser first, character and beverage second, product name last and largest.

Context and significance

Created in 1880, the design belongs to a period when commercial posters and trade imagery were becoming increasingly sophisticated in their use of humour, typography and brand recognition. A. Hoen & Co. brings together illustrative detail and direct advertising language: the striped cloth, reflective glass, shaded fur and barrel grain reward close attention, while the oversized product name can be understood at a glance.

What makes F. Klemm’s Bock especially engaging is the fluency with which it moves between caricature and advertisement. Its goat-headed drinker embodies the product’s name without requiring a lengthy explanation, and the contrast between his formal dignity and improbable anatomy gives the design its lasting comic energy.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
