broyhan-vintage-beer-poster-by-paul-scheurich-1911
Broyhan Vintage Beer Poster by Paul Scheurich, 1911

Paul Scheurich’s Broyhan lüttje Lagenbier. Hildesheimer Aktienbrauerei, created in 1911, makes its appeal through an unforgettable drinker rather than an idealised view of the brewery. A bespectacled, moustachioed man looms from the dark ground, his face modelled in fiery orange and russet tones. Below him stand a foaming mug of dark beer and a much smaller, gleaming cup. The contrast of scale turns the ritual of drinking into a compact visual joke, while the emphatic word “Broyhan” fixes the brand firmly above the figure’s head.

The poster belongs to a period when illustrated advertising was becoming an increasingly sophisticated part of urban visual culture. Scheurich, a German artist known for elegant, decorative imagery, gives an everyday beverage a characterful public identity: bold enough to be understood at a glance, but sufficiently detailed to reward closer inspection. Broyhan was a historic northern German style of beer, while the phrase “lüttje Lage” is associated with the regional custom of pairing beer with a small measure of spirit. Here, that drinking tradition is condensed into a theatrical encounter between figure, vessels and lettering.

A closer look

The man’s face commands the composition. Round spectacles sit low across his nose; beneath them, narrowed eyes and a carefully curled moustache sharpen his comic, slightly conspiratorial expression. Warm highlights pick out his forehead, cheeks, nose and fingers before falling abruptly into the near-black background. Scheurich does not pursue naturalistic flesh colour. Instead, the concentrated orange palette makes the figure read almost as a glowing emblem, strongly separated from the surrounding darkness.

At the lower left, the beer mug provides the poster’s principal material temptation. Its broad body contains a dark drink capped with pale foam, and its raised handle forms a clear silhouette against the table. Beside it, the smaller cup catches the light in cool beige and silvery-white accents. These two vessels establish an immediate rhythm of large and small. The figure’s hands and gaze direct attention towards them, guiding the eye down from his animated face to the products at the heart of the advertisement.

Clothing supplies quieter but telling detail. A dark jacket merges with the background, allowing a wedge of white shirt and the dotted tie to stand out. This selective use of pattern prevents the broad areas of black and brown from becoming inert. Above, the lettering creates a second centre of attention: “Broyhan” is large, pale and direct, while “lüttje Lagenbier Hildesheimer Aktienbrauerei” is arranged more discreetly overhead. Scheurich’s signature appears at the lower right, integrated into the design rather than competing with its message.

Context and significance

Early twentieth-century beverage posters had to accomplish several tasks at once: name the product, establish a recognisable mood and hold their own amid the visual density of public advertising. Scheurich answers with a shallow, tightly cropped composition and a limited range of strongly opposed colours. There is almost no setting and no narrative beyond the anticipation of a drink. The customer becomes the spectacle, his exaggerated physiognomy supplying humour and human presence where another designer might have relied on bottles, buildings or decorative ornament.

The result sits persuasively between caricature and commercial design. Its flat colour areas and forceful typography give it immediate graphic clarity, yet small observations—the low-set spectacles, curling moustache, dotted tie and glinting little cup—keep the character from becoming merely a logo. More than a period advertisement, Scheurich’s poster records how regional taste and drinking custom could be translated into a modern, memorable brand image.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
